The indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest coast and Alaska were formerly grouped under a general term “Eskimo”. Today, these people are known as Alaska Natives, referring to all of the peoples, from Inupiat, and Yupik, and Aleut, and others, all of which have their own cultures. The term Eskimo is derived from a phrase meaning "a person who laces a snowshoe", and is not derogatory, although most of the populations of today’s diverse Eskimo cultures do not use the term any longer. Despite some similarities in the cultures of the Native Alaskan Eskimo peoples, their cultural diversity makes it hard to generalize how Eskimos and Inuit used masks. The sustenance, mythology, soul concepts, even the language of the different communities were often very different. This striking design for the counted cross stitch enthusiast by Jacqueline Sarach, is from her Sandhill Design series, which specializes in wildlife, scenes and items from the Northwest and Alaskan region. Be sure to look for other pieces in the series; both for the counted cross stitch enthusiast and needlepoint artist too!
