Early sailors often named the Horned Puffin “sea parrots”, or the “Clown of the Sea”, due to its distinctive coloration. These delightful little birds can be seen along the coastlines of the North Pacific Ocean, from British Columbia to Alaska. Their main habitat preference includes cold ocean waters, sea cliffs, and rocky islands, and grassy bluffs. They like to nest in crevices and burrows on sea cliffs. An interesting species, the puffins look the same whether male or female, and do shed their brighter colors for a bit drabber look in the winter months. This charming portrait by Jacqueline Sarach is from her Sandhill Design Series which is predominantly scenes and wildlife native to the Northwest and Alaskan areas. Be sure to look for others in Counted Cross Stitch, and Needlepoint too!
