To get the effect she wants in her paintings, she uses a very simple palette. "I don’t use straight primary colors because to me they’re very harsh," says Jan. "I want a colorful, but muted look. I paint in just enough contrast that the paintings don’t look flat. Speaking further about her work, she is quoted as saying"I believe that the Victorian period had something to say to us. In this busy world we need to remember the value of romanticism and the quality of fine handmade things. I want my art to provide these things."
