Sampler collectors know and love the precious pieces that have been saved from ruination and given an appropriate place of honor in the Museums of the world. We are so very pleased and proud to present this magnificent cross stitch and crewel embroidery sampler reproduction for the vintage sampler enthusiast. This original piece was wrought by Eliza J Benneson, an American citizen, in 1835. Although research continues, little is known about Eliza, except through her stitching. (Interesting note, according to research of the US and Britain Census during what would have been approximately her life span, there were no less than a few dozen Eliza J and Elizabeth Benneson's in the world! )


The piece contains several bands of alphabets, and a central motif which showcases a small landscape, and an arbor of grape vines. The original sampler's verse read: "Let my few remaining days Be devoted to thy praise So the last, the closing scene Shall be tranquil and serene" along with the inscription. A copy of the original is shown below.

In this licensed reproduction by Paragon, that verse has been removed so that you, the stitcher, can add your own personalization. A row of numerals has replaced the smaller bands of alphabets.

You'll use a variety of stitches in cotton floss and wool crewel yarns to create this reproduction sampler; your own work will surely be a treasured piece of your family's history for many generations to come. The piece arrived in overly shopworn packaging which has been replaced.
