Over a dozen varieties of fresh flowers and fruit are featured in the visual spectacle of the original painting on which this needlepoint reproduction of a corner detail in the Fruit and Flowers Still Life ( Roesen, 1850) by Erica Wilson is based. According to the Metropolitan Museum of art, nineteenth-century improvements in cultivation and shipping practices enabled this extravagant assortment of fruit and flowers to come together for a still life painting, which includes a tropical pineapple and a pomegranate; all products that allude to America's future bounty. A German immigrant, Severin Roesen fled the revolutions of 1848 for the promises of America. He exhibited his paintings in New York in the 1850s, sending eleven paintings to the American Art-Union’s Free Gallery exhibitions between 1848 and 1852. In 1863 he settled in Pennsylvania, where his patrons included lumber industry moguls who reveled in the perceived limitlessness of American resources.
Truly some of the most sumptuous artwork turned into needlepoint, this treasure in needlepoint can be proudly displayed for a lifetime.
