Sampler collectors know and love the precious pieces that have been saved from ruination and given an appropriate place of honor in the Museums of the world. This American piece is based on the original sampler of Catharine Ann Speel. Born in 1792, her original ( shown below) was worked on a plain weave linen in silk in a variety of stitches including satin stitch, rococo, cross stitch, and eyelet stitches. From the Philadelphia Pennsylvania area, Catharine's original piece is part of the permanent Whitman Sampler collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Not currently on display, we've licensed the original image so you can see the differences between the kit & original piece wrought in 1805. Note the difference in the alphabet, which replaces Catharine's verse. The central scrolled signature area is also different, but contains enough room for a simple addition of your name. Embroidery stitches and applique work round out this design, which is a collector's item in and of itself. Your finished work will last for generations, and be a finished work you'll be proud to display for a lifetime!
