There is no denying that there's a romantic nostalgia associated with Steam Locomotives. Those who have lived in the steam age of railways will carry the most nostalgic memories right to the end. Shown here in it's glory before being retired for historic exhibitions is the last ever steam train built by the British Railways; The Evening Star. With her trademark green exterior and polished brightwork Star was built at Swindon works, 92220 was used over BR’s Western Region and over the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway line before its withdrawal in 1965  after a working life of only five years. Today, she is one of a handful of surviving Class 9Fs. Although steamed since retirement, Evening Star has been a static exhibit at the National Railway Museum in York for many years, where she forms part of the National Collection. She has also been on show at its birthplace in Swindon, at Steam – the museum of the Great Western Railway.
