Very few needle artists have placed a stamp on the last century’s craft industry the way that Elsa Williams did. World renown for her reproductions of period pieces, and for bringing the stitchers of today useable, workable pieces of art. Her crewel embroidery designs remain timeless and relevant and will stay that way for many more generations to come. The design for this bedspread was copied from the original which was sold at auction in France from the estate of Marie Antoinette where it was purchased by an aide of Benjamin Franklin and brought to the United States. It is especially interesting to discover that the solid areas were worked in Economy Stitch, which is also called New England Laid Stitch. Many early American embroideries were worked in this stitch to economize on crewel threads, which were in short supply at that time. The colors in this kit were very carefully matched to the original bedspread. Part of Elsa Williams very earliest Heritage Embroidery selections, this magnificent bedspread is a lovely creamy heavy homespun linen. Absolutely Spectacular!
