Chessie is probably the most endearing and certainly one of the most successful corporate symbols in American history. A Symbol of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, the original " Chessie" kitten, had family members added to the bunch as the years passed; two look-alike kittens ( "Nip" and "Tuck" in 1935, and a mate, “Peake” (from the railroad name as well – Chesapeake = “Chessie-Peake”), in 1937.

Soon Chessie, “America’s Sleepheart,” was the talk of the railroad world, and propelled C&O to the top ranks of rail advertising. For more information on this charming advertising artwork by artist Guido Grünewald, a Viennese artist who specialized in cats and other animals be sure to checkout the C & O historical society webpage !  This is "Peake", Chessie's mate, who is beautifully reproduced for the crewel embroidery enthusiast by the Queen of Needlework herself, Erica Wilson.   Worked on 100% linen fabric in lustrous wool yarns in a brown palette. Perfect for any cat lover or railway enthusiast ! Piece arrived in overly shopworn packaging which has been replaced.
