Woodlawn Plantation was an extensive, heavily wooded estate when  George Washington gave it to his nephew Lawrence Lewis and (foster) step-granddaughter Eleanor "Nelly" Parke Custis upon their marriage in 1799. It became the site of a handsome late Georgian mansion, surrounded by equally impressive grounds. In 1951, the National Trust for Historic Preservation made it a historic home museum, and began operating it as such to help show the lives of the Lewises and the culture and customs of an early nine-teenth century southern plantation home. This beautiful design for the needlepoint artist is an adaptation of a needlepoint firescreen originally created by Nelly.  Kept in the Lewis family until it was given to the Mount Vernon Ladies' association, it has once again found its way back to Woodlawn.  An abundant arrangement of magnolias, carnations, roses, daffodils and native woodland flowers in a formal pedestal vase has been  recreated for you by It's Polite to Point; t
ruly a piece that you'll be proud to display for a lifetime.
